We are pleased that the fifth workshop in “A smorgasbord of ideas for active learning” workshop series has been successful. The workshop was held on 4 May, 2012 with “Lecture recording in practice” as our focus this time. 15 participants attended this workshop.

Ideas shared in the workshop included many different ways to produce and use lecture recordings for improved teaching and learning. Dr Isabel Hwang (School of Biomedical Sciences) explained how lecture recordings have been useful to students’ learning, especially for those who were weaker in fundamental knowledge.  Dr Cherry Chow (School of Life Sciences) talked about combining videos and online quizzes to become required self-learning packages before laboratory lessons. It was found that less time was now spent in the lab sessions to explain concepts and procedures and more time allocated to students’ really doing the experiments. CTE scores were found to have increased too! Prof Michael Lower (Faculty of Law) explained his design in combining videos, eBooks and blogs to supplement classroom teaching. The videos and eBooks effectively prepared students before they came to class. The blogs encouraged ongoing discussions after the lesson. Michael found that he had more flexibility in using the classroom time. He also remarked that students were more eager to come to class – they had basic understanding and they came for questions and interactions.

Please find below the topics of the presentations, some PPTs for download (in pdf format), and a display of the photos taken.
