Peer assessment

Background information about peer assessment

Ideas:

Peer scores forming part of assignment marks.
The Nethersole School of Nursing at CUHK has used peer assessment of students’ group assignments for the past two years. After the submission of group projects, students are asked to assess their peers’ contribution with respect to four criteria, including the literature searching process, the contribution of ideas, the organisation of individual contributions to the project and writing up the report. The range of scores for an individual was normally within 10% of the total group score.

Rich feedback of work by peers.
Feedbacks and comments can be provided anonymously, or student can provide online feedback individually or in groups. In addition, senior students should be allowed to share their experience with current students for supportive student-to-student interactions.

Peer assessment of language skills.
Students who attended English language programmes at PolyU were asked to assess the proficiency of both the written and spoken English of their peers. Criteria such as preparation, content, organisation and delivery were used to evaluate students’ performance. Oral presentations and written reports were also used to rate performance. Teacher can read the following paper for more details: Cheng , W., & Warren, M. (2005). Peer assessment of language proficiency. Language Testing, 22(1), 93–121.
