May 2011 Learning activity workshops
The serial workshops of
“A smorgasbord of ideas for active learning I & II”
Two workshops under the series “A smorgasbord of ideas for active learning” were held on 17 and 20 May, 2011 respectively to disseminate the ideas of effective learning-activity designs.
Two teacher presentations were held in each of these workshops.
Authentic learning was the main focus of the first workshop:
- Problem-based learning in Chemistry: An authentic research training for undergraduates - Dr Kendrew Mak and Prof Kevin Leung (Department of Chemistry)
- Teaching product design with a role-playing game - Prof Will Ng (Department of Information Engineering)
The second workshop was focused on Peer learning:
- Co-creation of Learning Environment – Dr David Chow, Mr Fred Ku and Mr Franko Wong (Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics)
- Peer assessment in group projects - Ms Lisa Low and Ms Snowy Lai (The Nethersole School of Nursing)
About 20 teachers attended each workshop. The audience asked many questions about the actual procedures in carrying out these various activities. The events served well in offering practical and concrete advice on learning activity design and implementation that were based on first-hand experience.
